Overview

Alondra de la Parra, Music Director of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will be on maternity leave in April 2018 and thus unable to conduct the concert An Emotional Rollercoaster on Saturday 14 April 2018. We are excited to announce that the replacement conductor for this concert will be British conductor and composer Alexander Prior. At age 25, he is the Chief Conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada and we look forward to seeing him lead the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in this concert program.

Conductor Alexander Prior
Piano Sergio Tiempo 2018 Artist-in-Residence

Debussy Prélude á “L’après-midi d’un faune” (Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun)
Ginastera Concerto No.1 for Piano and Orchestra, Op.28
Brahms Symphony No.4 in E minor, Op.98

Prepare yourself for an emotional journey as our Musical Director, Artist-in-Residence and Queensland Symphony Orchestra perform three pieces that transport you from low to high and everywhere in between. A beautiful flute solo introduces Debussy’s groundbreaking piece full of non-western scales and slippery harmonies that leave you feeling relaxed and dreamy. Then, be sharply awakened by Ginastera’s Concerto – a complete firecracker that takes us on a voyage of extremes covering everything from the pastoral to a pounding, percussive finale. Finally, we hear Brahms’ Fourth, a monumental symphony.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra Music Director is proudly supported by Tim Fairfax AC. The Artist-in-Residence program is supported by the Trevor & Judith St Baker Family Foundation and The University of Queensland.
